Our growing philosophy is quite different as it incorporates not only solely natural methods, but regenerative processes that not only do not disturb the environment but work to actively improve our surroundings. I love to create new habitats on our farm for wildlife and the little critters! They are so important to the vitality of not only our farm, but to our communities and the planet as a whole. The term organic doesn't mean much anymore, and so I never really use that term to describe what we are doing here. It's so much more! We never, and I mean NEVER use chemicals of any kind on our property or plants. It's just never an option we have ever considered. Organic certification allows the use of various chemicals that I would never want in my food.
And so the question is... what exactly is in the fruits and vegetables that you buy? |
Sowing Seeds is a different kind of nursery. Our goal is not to just sell plants. Any nursery can do that, and that's just a small piece of what we do here. Our goal is to TEACH and to ENCOURAGE others to grow their own food. This is so important in a world where food shortages are becoming more common, and there is so much dependance on grocery stores and restaurants to give us food when we can be growing it for our families in our own little backyards! We want people to be able to gain confidence about being able to turn their own yards into food forests! It's so easy, and can be done on even 1/4 of an acre! We give the same coaching to families who take home our goat kids, and it is such a blessing to be able to help families move towards homesteading and self sufficiency. There will be many upcoming class offerings, so stay tuned for those updates!
What we are doing is regenerative, holistic and has a spiritual aspect as well as all plants are loved and prayed over from the time seeds are sown, to the time they are ready to leave for their new homes in your gardens. We are hopefully doing what God intended when He breathed life into Creation, as He gave us dominion over this earth to care for all living things and it is quite the responsibility! Our plants are well loved, and we talk to them daily (my daughter thinks I'm bananas! LOL). They even get to listen to worship music, and I know it helps support their growth and well being. Our greenhouse plants are all grown from seed, predominantly with Vermont based High Mowing Organic Seeds but we also really like organic varieties from Hudson Valley Seed Co, Seeds of Change - choosing heirloom varieties wherever possible, and at times finding other USDA certified organic seeds. We are a licensed by the state of Vermont, and our nursery and center are located in South Burlington, about 10 minutes from Burlington and the University of Vermont. We give all the glory to God for how He has blessed this amazing endeavor! Thanks so much for your support! |
